Afonso Seixas-Nunes

Afonso was born in Porto, Portugal, in 1973. He joined the Portuguese Province of the Society of (Jesuits) in 1998, after he graduated in Law by the Portuguese Catholic University (Porto), and was ordained priest in 2010.

Afonso has a degree in Philosophy by the Portuguese Catholic University (Braga) for which he was awarded the Prize Pe Vitorio de Sousa Alves and he has a degree in Theology by the Pontificia Universita Gregoriana (Italy). Afonso has a Master’s in International Law and Human Rights by the London School of Economics (UK). In early 2019, Afonso completed his doctoral thesis in International Humanitarian Law at the School of Law of the University of Essex (UK), entitled The Legitimacy and Accountability for the Deployment of Autonomous Weapon System under International Humanitarian Law (CUP, 2022). Since 2015, Afonso has been teaching Law in European and British Universities.

He is an invited lecturer at UCP Law School (Lisbon) and in September 2018, Afonso became a member of the Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict (ELAC) directed by Professor Dapo Akande at the Blavatnik School of Government. In August 2021, Afonso joined the Saint Louis University Law School as a faculty permanent member.

Afonso Seixas-Nunes entrou na Companhia de Jesus em 1998 e é padre Jesuíta desde 2010.

É licenciado em Direito pela UCP -Porto. Colaborou dois anos com o Gabinete de Estudos Internacionais da Faculdade de Direito (UCP- Porto) sob a orientação do Prof. Doutor Azeredo Lopes. Licenciou-se posteriormente em Filosofia (UCP-Braga. Prémio Vitorino de Sousa Alves) e em Teologia (Università Gregoriana – Roma).

É Mestre em Direito pela London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), U.K, tendo defendido a tese “The Legality of US Drone Strikes in Pakistan”. Em Outubro de 2014 foi admitido como aluno de doutoramento da Universidade de Essex (U.K.) e, em Janeiro de 2019, defendeu provas de doutoramento na Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Essex, UK, com o tema ‘The Legitimacy and Accountability for the Deployment of Autonomous Weapon Systems on the Battlefiled’. Durante os anos de 2015 a 2018 foi assistente da Faculdade de Direito da Univerdade de Essex.

Em Maio de 2018 foi convidado para um post-doutoramento no Instituto de Ética, Direito e Conflitos Armados (ELAC) da Universidade de Oxford (UK) sob a orientação do Prof. Doutor Dapo Akande. Em Maio de 2019 adquiriu a posição de PostDoctoral Research Fellow no ELAC, Junior Resarch Fellow the Campion Hall, Tutor do Exeter College Summer Program.

Desde 2021 é Professor da Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Saint Louis (EUA) e colaborador da Taylor Geospatial-Intelligence Institute

A sua área de investigação tem sempre versado a legitimidade internacional de novas tecnologias de guerra e mais recentemente a problemática dos sistemas automáticos/autónomos armados. A problemática da responsabilidade internacional por violações do Direito Internacional Humanitário causadas por sistemas autónomos bem como a análise das diferentes narrativas ético-jurídicas sobre o paradigma emergente do Machine-Learning.
